背景


Sesame is one of the main cash crop produced by small-farmers in Paraguay. Currently there are about 40,000 families engaged in the production of sesame in Paraguay, cultivating about 80,000 hectares. One of the main problems observed in the production of sesame is the lack of formal breeding and multiplication of sesame seeds. Under this situation the Faculty of Agriculture Science from the National University of Asuncion (FCA/UNA), in collaboration with the Mexican Government through the assistance of Mexican experts from the National Institute for Research in Agriculture, Livestock and Forestry (INIFAP), and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has carried out a program for improvement of seed production for white sesame in the Departments of San Pedro, Concepcion and Amambay. However, the production of black sesame in the south of Paraguay is facing the same problematic as the white sesame, regarding the mix of varieties associate with the lack of appropriate expertise for the production and the absence of a unique variety of black sesame to be reproduced.

Taking into account the results obtained through the project in the north of Paraguay with white sesame seeds, a similar strategy can be applied in order to solve the current problematic observed with the breeding and production of black sesame seed with small-farmers in the south of Paraguay. Furthermore, the significant achievements in improving the availability of improved white sesame seed production it is necessary to consolidate the production and use of improved white sesame seeds. Through this it will be possible to achieve the formalization of sesame seed production for the main production areas of the country.

The production system of certified seeds from varieties of sesame is adopted and improved, and the technical skill of producers and technicians for the production and use of new varieties with improved seed is consolidated.


成果


1. The strategic partnership with institutions from the public, private and academic sectors for the production of improved sesame seeds is strengthen.
2. Improved varieties of white and black sesame are identified, characterized and debugged.
3. Purified seeds are multiply and a breeding program for the development of new varieties is started.
4. Sesame seed and grain producers are trained in production technology and use of improved black and white sesame seeds.
5. Technological innovations for Small-Scale Farmers and the use of sesame as food are disseminated.
6. The experimental fields and laboratories of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences from the National University of Asuncion (FCA/UNA) and of the National Service for Quality and Health of Vegetables and Seeds (SENAVE) are strengthened.


活動


1.1. Conduct annual coordination meetings between the sectors involved.
1.2. Develop Minutes with the approved resolutions from the meetings of coordination between the sectors involved.
1.3. Conduct annual technical workshops and seminars (2 national and 1 international) to disseminate the results.
1.4. Produce annual reports on the achieved activities.
2.1. Collect and preserve white and black sesame seed.
2.2. Debug and characterize black sesame varieties at least in two agricultural cycles.
2.3. Carry out field test of varieties of sesame of at least two cycles in the experimental fields from the FCA/UNA, Headquarters and Subsidiaries: San Pedro del Ycuamandyyu, Pedro Juan Caballero and Santa Rosa Mission.
2.4. Install fields for seeds debugging in the FCA/UNA Headquarters.
2.5. Evaluate the results of the debugging process.
2.6. Determine the quality of seeds in the laboratory for seeds of the FCA/UNA Headquarters.
2.7. Register at least one new variety of white sesame seeds.
3.1. Install field for improved seeds nultiplication in the FCA/UNA Headquarters.
3.2. Submit improved seed to seed producers.
3.3. Set lots of parents, crossbreeding and selection in segregating populations.
4.1. Identify and select the producers to be involved in the project.
4.2. Conduct the baseline survey to producers involved in the project.
4.3. Elaborate materials on production technology for sesame production.
4.4. Conduct technical workshop and training for technicians, seed and grain producers.
4.5. Visit production fields of auditing seeds for verification and technical assistance.
4.6. Conduct field workshop with technicians, seed and grain producers.
4.7. Validate sesame seed drill for small farms.
5.1. Conduct soil test in order to provide recommendations for fertilizer and soil management.
5.2. Assistance of Mexican experts on at least three priority areas: (i) innovation and technology transfer with approach to new varieties of seed for Small-Scale Farmers, (ii) improvement of soil fertility, (iii) use of sesame as food.
5.3. Conduct technical and field workshop about new technology for sesame production.
5.4. Validate the technological innovations on the farms from sesame producers in the areas of intervention.
5.5. Elaborate materials for sesame producers.
5.6. Elaborate scientific articles related to sesame production and technology.
5.7.-5.8. Elaborate materials and conduct workshops on the use of sesame as food.
6.1. Equip the laboratory for plants quality in the FCA/UNA Santa Rosa Misiones.
6.2. and 6.3. Strengthening seed quality laboratory and soil laboratory with equipments.
6.4. Strengthening the experimental fields of the FCA/UNA for production of improved sesame seed.
6.5. Third-country training of Paraguayan counterparts in Mexico.
6.6. Country-focused training on food safety of sesame grain for export.
6.7. Strengthening laboratory of the SENAVE

(1)現地実施体制


Currently there are more than 250 teachers at the FCA/UNA, from them around 200 are located in its Heatquater in San Lorenzo and 50 are distributed in its 5 subsidiaries locates in San Pedro del Ycuamandyyu, Pedro Juan Caballero, Santa Rosa Misiones, Caazapa and Chaco. Its annual budget is approximately 3,900,000 USD The FCA/UNA has 5 dependences, from where Agronomic Engineering is in charge of this project. For the implementation of this project there has been assigned approximately 14 researchers distributed in San Lorenzo, San Pedro del Ycuamandyyu, Pedro Juan Caballero and Santa Rosa Misiones. For the field activities related to the project, the FCA/UNA provides their experimental fields in all of these locations.

The Project for Sustainable Management of Natural Resources (PMRN) supported by the German International Cooperation (GIZ) seeks to promote soil management techniques and forest management with small-scale producers in the eastern region of Paraguay (Concepcion, San Pedro, Caaguazu, Caazapa, Paraguari). It aims to change the conventional production system used in agriculture and forestry for a sustainable system including new tillage techniques, fertilizer, crop rotation, agroforestry, reforestation and management native forest.
